Whitby Chicks With Sticks Lacrosse Tournament

The Thunder Bay ICE Intermediate Girls Lacrosse Team traveled to Southern Ontario to compete in the Whitby Chicks With Sticks Lacrosse Tournament from June 22-24, 2018. The team competed in the B division along with 4 other teams, all from Southern Ontario.

Three of the players from the team were unfortunately involved in a car accident on their way to the tournament but, thankfully, were not seriously injured. They were all able to participate in the tourney, as well as an exhibition game against a team from Orillia. Despite only having 5 runners they were still able to win the exhibition game.

The team did not have any games on Friday which allowed them a little time to recuperate but also meant the rest of the weekend would be a more compressed schedule. The team would also be playing the entire tourney with a short bench of 8 runners and one goalie as some players were not able to attend.

They kicked things off on Saturday with wins over Simcoe and Windsor before facing the 3-0 Nepean Knights team on Sunday morning and the Orillia team an hour later. They would end up in a 2-2 tie with Nepean after a last minute goal by Kayla Etreni and would also go on to defeat Orillia in the following game, securing a spot in the Championship Game against Nepean.

Having a short bench and little time to recover before the finals , the team was in a tough spot facing a Nepean Knights team with 16 runners on their bench. Their grit and determination shone through though as they were able to notch a goal and take a 1-0 lead in the first period. Nepean evened the score with a second period goal and regulation time ended in a 1-1 tie. Off to a 10 minute overtime period to decide the Championship!

By this point the entire rink is packed with spectators cheering on the teams and a great many of them are cheering for Thunder Bay!

Backed by stellar goal-tending, the team hoped to make it through the overtime period and take their chances in a shoot-out. The overtime period did not produce any goals but at this point the teams are notified that tournament rules state that they continue to play overtime periods until one team scores. No shoot-out!.

The game continued through to the 7th overtime period before Nepean managed to score with 40 seconds left in the period.

The team showed an incredible amount of heart and determination this weekend and should be unbelievably proud of their accomplishments. Well done!!

The team will take part in one more tournament in early July before returning to Whitby in early August for the Provincial Championships. Good luck!!
